For everyone's info: you don't need to root the modem if you're using a SIM from a provider that uses the Telstra network. You may need to change the APN details, but that's it! I've set up a few of these for clients that wanted better performance than what was offered by their NBN technology.

Step 1: Turn off your Smart Modem. Step 2: Peel back the flap. On the back of the modem, peel back the flap that is covering the SIM card port. Step 3: Push down on the SIM card. Push down on the SIM card with your finger or a small flat object until you hear a click. The SIM will pop out slightly allowing it to be removed. If you don't have a modem that's compatible with a booster, Telstra will provide a Telstra Smart Modem (Gen 3) at no additional cost. This first Telstra Smart WiFi Booster will set you back 8 outright, or per month over a 24-month term.
Furthermore, the new Telstra Smart Modem 3 comes with a 4G SIM card to enable you to have a backup option should your NBN connection go down. You can connect the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 to another ISP with FTTP (Fibre to the Premises). Simply locate the reset button on the back of the modem, near the SIM card slot, and press it. Then, connect the Ethernet cable from your NTD (Network Termination Device) to the Internet/WAN port on the modem.
